Design
What I can and cannot do:
I design mainly plantscapes for residential clients. Meaning, I focus on the plants! I design softscapes, not so much hardscapes. I am a landscape designer, not a landscape architect.
I do not offer installation services, because I am by myself, but I work with landscaping companies who do offer these services if you do not already have a landscaper in mind for installation. Check out the "Partners" page to see them.
I focus on perennials, shrubs, grasses, and trees. I also of course draw out and label particular groundcover materials such as rocks or mulch, accents such as boulders, and existing hardscaping, but I generally do not calculate out exactly how much you need to cover a space, because most contractors who do installations will calculate that for you. I can provide specific names of these hardscaping materials if desired, such as "1 1/2 inch Black Granite" or "Shredded Cedar Mulch".
I can draw out desired hardscaping elements such as concrete slabs, but keep in mind that I am not a landscape architect, so I do very little with hardscaping designing, other than just drawing out where the client desires these features to be.
I cannot guarantee that the shape I draw out will be exactly how it can be installed and if it will work perfectly in the area. I do not record information such as soil grade (slope), composition, compaction level, drainage, etc. My designs are mostly to help clients with plant selection and arrangement, spacing, etc. Talk to a landscaping company who installs hardscaping to get a better idea of if your hardscape idea is feasible.
I am not an irrigation tech, so I do not work with irrigation systems. I can tell you the water needs of the plants, and create a cohesive plan according to such water needs, but I will not be analyzing your water pressure, current hardware, drip systems, etc. I can of course organize a place according to different irrigation zones if specified, such as having a section of plants that will all tolerate irrigation 3 times/week, and other section with plants will tolerate 2 times/week, but I do not plan irrigation systems.
I draw out my plans using draw.io at this time. I do not currently work with drafting programs such as CADD, and I do not use geographic information systems (GIS). If your project requires these, please seek out a licensed landscape architect.
I do not offer free consultations. I charge an hourly rate for my time and knowledge/expertise. Please consider this when booking. The larger the space is, the longer the consultation tends to be. Most of my clients pay between $150 to $250 for a design consultation.
I generally require a certain percentage of the estimate as a down payment before I will begin the project.
The price of your design will depend on the scope of your project. I do not have a minimum price for projects! Even if it is a small portion of your yard, I can help!
What my Designs Include:
My designs include a to-scale digital design with accuracy to the nearest 3 inches, a plants list with common and scientific names of the species, and alternative varieties to use in case of a lack of availability of certain varieties. I also include a general watering guide.
If more detail in the plants list is preferred (plant descriptions, expected mature sizes, features, and even pictures) I will include requested details. I will also include more documents, drawings, sketches, etc upon request. Examples of this include specific care guides for the plants in the design, sketches of what the design will look like from different perspectives, etc.
I offer one free revision to all of my designs.
My designs include color coding. My clients often like to see the different color groupings so they can get an idea of how the space will look and feel. If you are colorblind or would like a particular labeling system, please specify!
I usually export my designs as a png or pdf. Plants lists are pdfs. If you have a preference as to what form your design is in, please specify!

Consultation
I charge by the hour for consultations. How long your consultation will take depends on how much needs to be discussed and measured. Most of my clients spend between $150 and $250 for a design consultation.
Generally during a design consult we will:
Look at your yard and talk about the conditions of your yard
Sunny, shady, nearby plants and structures, drainage, soil type, current irrigation setup, etc
Discuss your needs as the client
Who is installing this? Do you need someone to install? Are you installing this yourself? How much yard work are you willing to do? Do you have a plan for maintenance? Do you have children? Pets? Are there HOA requirements? Plant-specific allergies?
Discuss your preferences
Prefered colors, forms, textures, and plant density. Preferences on water requirements (xeric or non-xeric plants?) Pollinator preferences, preferences on other wildlife (do you want a pollinator garden or are you afraid of or allergic to bees? Do you want to support birds by including plants that produce fruit or seeds or provide good cover for nesting? Or would you prefer fruitless and seedless varieties where possible?). Preferences of groundcover materials and accent materials such as boulders
Take measurements and pictures of your yard and the exterior of your house. We may also take measurements between existing plants
Discuss timeline for estimate and general timeline for project. A more specific timeline of the project will be in your estimate
Payment for consultation
I bill through quickbooks, which allows multiple payment options.
Estimate
I will send you an estimate through quickbooks with details of cost, notes from consultation, summary of plan, and contract
Agree upon final estimate and contract
For projects over $1000, do require a certain percentage of the project cost as a down payment before I begin working on your design
After all of this is in order, I will begin the project!
Design
When I am finished with your design, I will send you a preview version, along with a bill. I will send the complete version of the plan, along with the plants list, watering guide, and any other requested documents when the bill is paid
I offer one free revision of all of my designs. If more revisions are needed, we will discuss it at that time
